Charlotte Friedman

Psychotherapist

I see Adult Individuals, Couples and Families with Adult Children.

My interest in working with adult individuals is to help foster a deep understanding of whatever is bought into the consulting room, whether depression, uncomfortable feelings, low self-esteem, anxiety, trauma or obsessive thinking. Often, we intellectually know how we feel but can’t shift the feelings. They seem to be our ‘cohabitees’. We can’t break the pattern.  In slowly developing an understanding of ourselves and our experiences, we can manage them better and be released from the hold they may have.

In my couple work, I help couples in crisis explore both intimacy and individuality. We often get stuck in circular patterns of relating. Through dialogue, couples can understand each other and themselves in the relationship better, to break an unhealthy ‘marital dance.’ I provide a space for couples to profoundly hear and understand each other, so that they can create their ‘own couple’, not one copied from their families of origin.

I was a Family Law Barrister before training as a Psychotherapist, representing both husbands and wives in complex divorce cases.  I have sat as a Deputy District Judge in the County Court and am a trained mediator. My experience as a lawyer compelled me to train as a Psychotherapist to understand how people unconsciously choose their partners.  I have written a book to help with the emotional impact of divorce called Breaking Upwards.

I am a member of the British Psychoanalytic Council and the British Psychotherapy Foundation. I did a Systemic training at the Institute of Family Therapy and a Psychodynamic training at the Tavistock. My Foundation training was at the Institute of Group Analysis. I am a member of the Ethics and Screening Committee of the British Psychoanalytic Council.
